Teaching Port Chicago
Lesson Plans and Teacher's Guides

The explosion at Port Chicago was the deadliest homefront disaster of World War II, and it exposed the deep inequities Black Americans faced in the military. The response to the disaster — including the protest of the Port Chicago 50 and the advocacy it inspired — became one of the Bay Area’s most important contributions to the nation, helping push the United States Navy to become the first federal institution to formally end racial segregation.

Our education resources bring this history to life for students and educators. We offer Teacher’s Guides for Upper Elementary, Middle, and High School students that provide background, context, discussion points, and teaching tips to help you introduce Port Chicago’s story in your classroom.

For teachers who want ready-to-use classroom activities, each guide includes corresponding Lesson Plans with step-by-step instructions, reading passages, and discussion prompts. Together, these resources allow students to explore the choices, courage, and consequences of the Sailors’ actions, and understand how this Bay Area story connects to the broader struggle for civil rights and equality.
