The explosion at Port Chicago was the deadliest homefront disaster of World War II, and it exposed the deep inequities Black Americans faced in the military. The response to the disaster — including the protest of the Port Chicago 50 and the advocacy it inspired — became one of the Bay Area’s most important contributions to the nation, helping push the United States Navy to become the first federal institution to formally end racial segregation.
