Port Chicago Weekend stands as a powerful commemoration of Port Chicago Remembrance Day, bringing together cultural expression, community gathering, and educational engagement to honor the Sailors whose World War II sacrifice not only shaped the course of history but also ignited a movement that advanced civil rights in America.
⚓ Port Chicago Weekend, inaugurated in 2024 on the 80th anniversary of the Port Chicago disaster, is held each July as an annual gathering of remembrance and community, honoring the courage, service, and lasting legacy of the Port Chicago Sailors.
Organized by the Port Chicago Alliance and supported by a network of sponsors and partners, the weekend brings together cultural programs, community gatherings, and educational events that highlight both the tragedy of 1944 and its lasting impact on the civil rights movement.
Attendees of Port Chicago Weekend not only experience moving tributes and educational programs, but also gain a deeper connection to local history, while the surrounding community benefits from increased cultural visibility, tourism, and opportunities for civic engagement.
From its inaugural year, Port Chicago Weekend has been presented in partnership with the National Park Service, Visit Concord, the African American Museum and Library at Oakland, and Contra Costa County Bar Association, with support from cities across California and national organizations that have championed recognition and justice for the Sailors’ bravery and sacrifice. ⚑
