Port Chicago Student Book Program

Port Chicago Student Book Program was developed by Port Chicago Alliance to ensure public middle and high school students in the East San Francisco Bay Area have access to books and resources to learn the history of Port Chicago Naval Magazine and the legacy of the heroes of Port Chicago.

As of October 2025, Port Chicago Student Book Program has donated over 65 copies of the book "The Port Chicago 50" to classrooms, school libraries, and student educational programs. In addition to book donations, we assist schools and school districts, like Mount Diablo Unified School District, with purchasing materials and connect educators to valuable teaching resources to enhance classroom learning about Port Chicago history.

We are proud that our very first contribution to the Port Chicago School Book Program came directly from author Steve Sheinkin, who generously gifted copies of his award-winning book The Port Chicago 50: Disaster, Mutiny, and the Fight for Civil Rights to Port Chicago Alliance in 2023. We distributed those books to the East Bay Regional Park District's Thurgood Marshall Youth Development Program, where East Bay Area youth learn about the history of Port Chicago at Thurgood Marshall Regional Park – Home of the Port Chicago 50.

All merchandise is manufactured and shipped through RedBubble, where every item purchased yields the Book Program revenue amounting to 20% of the sales price. Not only does purchasing this merchandise raise awareness for this important history, but 100% of the profit goes toward purchasing books for donation to schools and educational programs. Additionally, Port Chicago Alliance matches these profits dollar-for-dollar, doubling the books we are able to donate to public schools. ⚑
