Discovering the Story of Port Chicago

David Ramsey’s connection to the Port Chicago story began while preparing to portray one of the Port Chicago 50 in the 1999 film Mutiny. The film's executive producer, Morgan Freeman, encouraged Ramsey to read Dr. Robert L. Allen’s landmark book, The Port Chicago Mutiny, to better understand the history and the experiences of the Sailors whose courage inspired the film.

That introduction left a lasting impression. Through Dr. Allen’s research and the powerful story of the Port Chicago 50, Ramsey gained a deep appreciation for the significance of their stand for justice and the enduring legacy they left behind — an understanding that continues to shape his commitment as National Ambassador for the Port Chicago Alliance.
